Utah Powder Werks Terms of Quality
Quality – Utah Powder Werks is a full-service powder coating shop. Our goal is to provide our customers with the highest quality service, delivered with fast turnaround times, to guarantee complete satisfaction. We utilize the latest technology and procedures for testing powder thickness and thermoset cure completion.
Intake/Preparation for Powder – All jobs need a full part description of every part or component dropped off, in writing, with no part assemblies. This is documented on paper during intake and an image of this form will be attached to your invoice in our accounting system.
All jobs need a full part description in writing, including measurements, colors, and any special instructions. If a PO is required, it is critical that all items/parts are disassembled prior to arrival at Utah Powder Werks. To prevent premature failure, it is critical that thick oils, hot-rolled steel mill scale, and weld slags are removed prior to coating. Sand blasting is the most thorough and economical way to remove such non-fused surface substrates. Masking will be completed with written instructions provided by the client. Utah Powder Werks will not be responsible for masking areas not indicated in writing or drawing.
Stripping, Cleaning, and Rinsing – Parts that are powder coated must be stripped (all metals), blasted (all metals), or burned off and blasted (steel only). This also cleans most metals of silicones, light oils, and debris. Any built-up or hardened oils or grease should be removed, or an additional cleaning fee will be assessed by the time.
Outgassing – Outgassing is required for all stripped, washed, and cast parts. This process involves heating parts well above the curing temperature to burn off residual oils, oils trapped in hollow tubes, contaminants from cast metals, and allows them to be removed from the surface via media blasting.
Sand blasting – Utah Powder Werks offers sandblasting services at $115/hour or $1.92/minute. We have a 9x9 blast room, and 33x96” cabinet. We use only clean, fresh, sharp media that promote cleanliness and mechanical adhesion of the powder. All stripped, washed, and cast metals require blasting prior to coating to reduce the chances of outgas-related defects, fisheyes, or other non-fused debris that can cause issues with a new, smooth finish to your coated parts. All precautions are taken to eliminate or reduce chances of outgassing-we will powder coat the parts ONE TIME ONLY. Requests for recoating will be charged at full price an additional time. We can make the recommendation to apply a special outgas forgiving primer prior to top coating your parts at an extra charge.
Pricing and Quotes – Quoted prices cover standard processing unless otherwise noted. In the event an additional process is required due to an unforeseen condition (outgassing, extraordinary contamination, sanding of defects from use that were not observable before stripping parts to bare metal, e.g. fillers, metal scratches/dents, weld porosity, etc) we will call or text an explanation and price increase quote for your approval. All quoted prices are before tax and subject to change without notice. Prices cannot be confirmed until parts have been delivered, inspected, processed in intake, and documented by Utah Powder Werks.
Minimum Charge/Deposits – Utah Powder Werks has a $120 minimum charge PER order, and a $30 minimum charge per order. Specialty powders (not in a bulk box) custom ordered will be an additional charge. Fees for special order powder coating colors are non-refundable if your order is changed or cancelled. A deposit of at least 20% of the invoice total is required at drop-off.
CLEAR COAT is required for all chrome, metallic, silver, bronze, and certain other colors as required by powder technical data sheets. It is charged at a custom rate depending on orders, but pricing is standardized for common parts like wheels and sheet/tube.
CANDY coatings are specialty tinted clear coats that vary in final finished based upon thickness. Though we pride ourselves on being a top candy finisher in the region, variance in final hue should be expected on most parts but we will try our best to turn your vision into reality.
COLOR MATCHES are available to automotive and household finishes (e.g. Chevy Oxford White or Benjamine Moore matte blue interior paint). An additional fee of custom sample sprayouts, swatch orders, and time spent color matching is assessed based on time and materials required to get a match. COLOR MATCHES ARE NOT GUARANTEED as samples on thin aluminum swatches will not always match ¼” steel or cast aluminum furniture once curing is completed.

We are refinishing your used parts, and it doesn’t always go to plan. If a recoat is required due to our error or an unforeseen metal condition or defect, we will call or text as soon as it is discovered, and you will be given an updated timeline. Communication and transparency is important to us!
Rush Orders – Utah Powder Werks offers expedited service for a fee charge based on urgency and invoice total. It also may decline depending on what we have going on in the shop like contractual production work.
Rush fees schedules are as follows:
· Next Day: 50%
· 2-day: 30%
· 3-day: 20%
· Same day: Prolly not but maybe at some obscene price point
Unknown Conditions – Quoted process cover only Utah Powder Werks standard stripping, preparation, sandblasting, and coating processes unless otherwise noted. Excessively soiled parts may require additional treatment to prepare parts for successful coating. Metal condition can be on the scale from perfect to pitted, scratched, dented, cracked, haunted, or cursed. If we find something strange, we’ll let you know and make a plan and adjust pricing, if required. It happens-some of your stuff is whack.
Part Inspection – All items shall be inspected by Utah Powder Werks quality control (the coater and the owner) and documented as pass or fail on the intake sheet. However, customers must inspect all items/parts prior to wrapping, padding, or shipping, and must sign off that quality of workmanship and expectations are met.
Returns and Repairs – Purchasers must contact Utah Powder Werks regarding noticeable damage, and it must be received in writing within 30 calendar days of pickup or delivery.
Custom Work – Candy and Illusion(dormant) colors, especially gold and copper colors, are likely to have mild-to-severe color variance. Chromes, candies, dormants, and wrinkles are prone to bubbling if there are pin holes in the substrate or unwelded metal junctions, or no venting to welded tubing. Because of this, Utah Powder Werks will process the job ONE TIME ONLY. Any requested redoes will be charged AGAIN AT FULL PRICE, and at a schedule we determine. All wrinkle-colored parts will require holes drilled in each sealed tube. If drill holes are not done, it may result in bubbling powder and we may refuse service.
Warranty – Wheels and brakes are guaranteed to not chip, peel, crack, or delaminate for 3 years from the date of coating. Care of freshly coated parts will likely be explained but the finish is the same as the factory finish. Do not treat your powder coated parts with strong solvents, acids, caustic cleaners, de-ironing sprays, or cleaning agents that may stain or discolor your parts. Test things out on a cloudy, cool part of the day on a hidden area prior to use. We can usually tell if you messed this up because we’ve tested a lot of products. The most common cause for warranty is a lack of proper curing and this can be determined by an industry-standard ASTM test for powder cure. Also, don’t hit curbs, we won’t warranty poor steering. SOME COLORS FADE AND THIS IS USUALLY DOCUMENTED IN A TECHNICAL DATA SHEET.
Shop Keeper’s Insurance for you, your vehicle, and us! – Wheels, tires, and brake calipers-we are fully insured with personal and property liability for such procedures and take great care to put factory air pressure in tires, torque wheels to factory specs, perform a buddy check with all vehicle drop-offs before handoff to customers, and bleed brake systems followed by a brief test drive to ensure the braking system is safe and feels factory at the pedal.
